An analysis of the protein composition of the albumen gland was performed on two strains of Biomphalaria glabrata; one of them was susceptible to infection by Schistosoma mansoni, the other less susceptible. The molecular weight, isoelectric point and chemical nature of these proteins were defined.
A specific protein observed in the glands from the less susceptible strain is a glycoprotein whose molecular weight is 800,000. This protein is composed of two fractions whose pI is 6.2 and ca. 4.8, respectively.
