HAEMOCYTES OF THE FRESHWATER SNAIL VIVIPARUS ATER (GASTROPODA, PROSOBRANCHIA)
Department of Animal Biology, University of Modena via Berengario, 14-41100 Modena, Italy
Morphological and functional characteristics of the haemocytes of Viviparus ater were studied. Only one cell type occurs in the haemolymph: the spreading haemocyte. These cells have the same functions as blood cells belonging to the spreading type found in other gastropods. It is also suggested that the spreading haemocytes represent the ancestral cell responsible for defence mechanisms.
