ANATOMY AND SYSTEMATIC PLACEMENT OF SAYELLA LAEVIGATA (GASTROPODA: PYRAMIDELLIDAE: SAYELLINAE)

JOHN B. WISE

Houston Museum of Natural Science, One Hermann Circle Drive, Houston, Texas, 77030 P 1799, USA. email jwise{at}hmns.org

The ectoparasitic snail Sayella laevigata was first described by Orbigny (1842) and first placed in the genus Sayella by Odé (1994) without discussion. This study provides justification for this assignment to the genus Sayella Dall, 1885 and to the subfamily Sayellinae Wise, 1996. Sayella laevigata possesses an elongate penis, with subapical swelling tapering to a short terminal nipple, that is characteristic of the genus.
